Government will try to ensure food and nutrition for all people of the country
Honorable prime minister said that her government will try to create and implement new legislation on food and agricultural production and also will try to ensure adequate food and nutrition to all people of the country. In the inauguration ceremony of “South Asia Right to Food Conference” she also emphasized on taking regional initiatives to eradicate poverty, hunger and on the establishment of SARC Food Bank. She said, “There is no substitute of taking initiatives to eradicate poverty and hunger from South Asia and recently occurred earthquake of Nepal reminds us of the necessity of the food security.” She also said that it is important to accelerate the initiative of the establishment of SARC Food Bank, the leaders of the South Asia nations are trying their best for doing that as early as possible. SARC Food Bank will play as a role of friend for each poor people and not let any person die starving.She invited all to execute the planning of establishment of the SARC Seed Bank to ensure the involvement and empowerment of farmers regarding the seeds. Among 5 basic needs of human e.g. food, clothing, shelter, education, medical care, Food is on the top need. In spite of achieving improvement in civilization, science and knowledge, till now adequate foods are not available to all people worldwide.
Prime minister said that according to World Food and Agriculture Organization, among 7.3 billion people 805 million people suffer from malnutrition in the world. 1 of 9 doesn’t get adequate food and among them 791 million starving people live in developing countries and 276.4 million people live in the South Asia region in hunger. Prime minister added, food security is not dependent on food production only. It is really difficult to ensure food for every person. Different factors affect food availability. Minimum 20 billion dollar is necessary to remove hunger worldwide. 1.76 trillion USD is used in the military sector which is 2.5 percent of world’s GDP. A part of this amount is enough to eradicate hunger and poverty from the world. She mentioned that in 2013-14 economic year, 38.343 million metric ton rice were produced in Bangladesh and achieved self sufficiency in food production. Food preservation ability has increased to 1.9 million metric ton. She hope that experts attending the conference will recommend some initiatives to eradicate poverty from this region. She also requested to the other country to stop wasting their surplus foods.
Nobel Prize winner Kailash satyarthi said that there are so many children starving all over the world and it is not possible to achieve food security separately. Initiatives for getting food security, education and other development should be dome simultaneously. People from South Asia should start and continue a dynamic movement to establish their right to food.
The program was organized by Anti Poverty Platform (APP). Noble Prize Winner Kailash Shatyarthi was present there as honorable guest, Food Minister Advocate Md. Kamrul Islam as chief guest, 43 national, international organization’s forum related to APP were also present there. The program was chaired by Dr, Kazi Khalikuzzaman.

Intensify research to ensure food security, PM asks scientists
Terming agriculture the driving force behind the country's economy, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called upon the agriculture scientists May 9 Saturday to intensify their research to ensure food and nutrition security of the people.
In this connection, she assured the agri scientists and researchers of providing all kinds of cooperation, saying her government would do whatever necessary to this end.The Prime Minister was addressing a function at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agriculture University in Gazipur Saturday morning, marking its 16th founding anniversary.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haq, Krishibid Abdul Mannan, MP, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, MP, and Zahid Ahsan Russel, MP, spoke at the function as the special guests. Vice Chancellor of the university Professor Dr M Mahbubur Rahman was in the chair.
