Mr. Md Shafiqul Islam Laskar

The Honorable Additional Secretary of the MoHFW and Focal Point of SUN movement Bangladesh says, “Think Multi-Sectorally, Act Sectorally”

A clean bill of health is the most enviable state for a country, especially in the field of health and nutrition, expressed Mr.Md Shafiqul Islam Laskar, the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and Focal Point of Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) movement Bangladesh, in an interview with Bangladesh Civil Society Network for Promoting Nutrition (BCSNPN). While briefing the existing nutritional status of Bangladesh, he said that thirty years back the nutritional state of Bangladesh was not as enhanced as the current stipulation. But still we need to pay more attention to achieve the desired goal.

The present Focal Point of SUN movement Bangladesh also said that the Global SUN movement is a more coordinated approach with nutrition specific and nutrition sensitive intervention. As we all know that our Honorable Prime Minister is one of the Global SUN Movement leader, the Bangladesh Government is functioning very promptly in the battle against malnutrition. Concerning the issue he again mentioned the multi-sectoral approach and identified the task to be “Think Multi-sectorally, act sectorally”. The major point is to raise single voice aligned with malnutrition. On the other hand there is no doubt that the SUN Alliance has enormous impact on the sound nutrition state of Bangladesh as they are even having revolutionary communication like global teleconferences.

“The initiative and intervention are in initial stage and the Government, Donor, civil societies and the United Nation organization should come forward with a more comprehensive approach”, the Honorable Additional Secretary of the MoHFW

The Additional Secretary addressed the BCSNPN as a prospectus association playing the encouraging role in the meadow of nutrition. But he also alleged that every society in Bangladesh gets deterrent division into several branches. This broken part of societies for instance two civil societies in Bangladesh is not a good sign and it should be patched up into one unit for the betterment of the malnourished people of Bangladesh. Actually the unity of the societies resembles the “ACE IN THE HOLE”.

“The intervention is in the initial stage and the Government, Donor, Civil Societies and the United Nation organization should come forward with a more comprehensive approach”, the Honorable Additional Secretary of the MoHFW Mr. Laskar expressed. Regarding the Inter-ministerial Coordination, he gave the information that there are twelve ministries working for the improvement and implementation of nutritional activities in addition to Health Ministry.
