25-26 February 2014, Athens, Greece
Greece had held a conference entitled “Nutrition and Physical Activity from Childhood to Old Age: Challenges and Opportunities” which took place in Athens on 25–26 February 2014. The event related nutrition and physical activity to the entire lifespan with a special focus on childhood obesity as a grave public health concern. High-level speakers addressed effective interventions from sensitive childhood to vulnerable old age. WHO/Europe staff presented the latest WHO data on the burden of disease related to diet and physical activity, including an epidemiological update and the latest policy developments within the WHO European Region. This contribution, in particular, gave insight into childhood obesity and introduced a new report on nutrition in primary health care as a basis for discussion of the challenges that obesity and other diet-related noncommunicable diseases pose to health systems. WHO staff and EU representatives launched a jointly developed set of country profiles giving an overview of obesity in European Member States. This allowed for the first time meaningful comparisons across the Region and the monitoring of trends and policy impact over time. Other speakers at the conference included the Greek Minister of Health and Social Solidarity, Mr Adonis Georgiadis, high-level EU representatives and a wide range of international experts.
